Villa Noailles, Hyères
Project info >
Most likely, the parietal decoration of the Flower Room in Villa Noailles, designed by Theo Van Doesburg , was not carried out in accordance with the project, due to a misinterpretation from the drawings sent by the artist: the original abstract composition was then mirrored and wrongly composed, leading to an unexpected output. This mistake is comically akin to the texture-mapping process in 3D digital modeling: an image is "wrapped" around a 3D object to visually simulate physical materials. The sculpture re-enacts the Flower Room mistake through the pantomime of texture swapping, through which the material of a physical object is changed as if it was a digital texture setting. The ceramic sink transfigures from its original material to an abstract bouquet pattern, so that sink, textures, errors, and flowers take a physical shape in an ambiguous object.
